Smart home kit looks great on a shop shelf but quickly becomes a frustration if you buy device-by-device without a plan. The bulbs don't talk to the speaker, the doorbell needs its own app, and Alexa half-works. This guide is what we tell UK clients before they spend a penny — pick a platform, build around the rooms you actually use, and add only what makes daily life easier.
Pick One Hub Platform First
The single biggest decision is the platform that ties everything together. For most UK homes we recommend Apple Home (HomeKit) if the household runs iPhone, or Google Home / SmartThings on Android. Power users with mixed devices should look at Home Assistant. Matter and Thread are now mature enough that new kit usually works across all of these — but stick to one primary app so family members don't need to learn three.
Start With Lighting
Smart lighting is the highest-impact, lowest-cost starting point. Philips Hue is the safe bet for reliability and ecosystem; LIFX is a strong WiFi alternative with no hub; Aqara and IKEA TRÅDFRI are good budget options on Zigbee. In a UK property, switch out the bulbs in the rooms you actually sit in — kitchen, living room, bedroom — before you do hallways and cupboards.
Don't Forget the Switch
A smart bulb only works if power stays on at the wall switch. Pair every smart bulb room with a smart switch or wireless scene controller (Aqara, Lutron, Philips Hue dimmer) so the household isn't trained to switch the bulbs 'dumb' every time.
Heating
Smart heating is one of the few categories that genuinely pays back in the UK. Tado, Nest Learning Thermostat and Hive all work with a standard British combi or system boiler. Tado's per-radiator TRVs are the gold standard for multi-zone control — heat only the rooms you're in, drop empty rooms 2–3°C, and most UK homes save 15–25% on gas.
Blinds & Curtains
Motorised blinds used to be a luxury install. IKEA FYRTUR, Aqara roller motors and Somfy are now affordable enough for most homes. Combined with a sunrise/sunset schedule and an outdoor-light sensor, they transform a bedroom and stop south-facing rooms cooking in summer.
Cameras, Doorbells & Locks
Ring and Nest are the easiest video doorbells; Reolink is the best value for outdoor cameras if you don't want a monthly cloud fee. For smart locks on UK doors, Yale Conexis and Aqara U200 are the most reliable on standard British multi-point locks. Always keep a physical key — and never rely on a single battery-powered lock for the only way in.
Audio & Voice
Sonos is still the cleanest multi-room audio with AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect built in. For voice control, pick the assistant that matches your phone — Siri on Apple Home, Google Assistant on Android, Alexa if you already have Echo speakers. Don't try to run all three.
The Network Underneath It All
Smart home reliability is a WiFi problem 80% of the time. A single ISP-supplied router rarely covers a UK semi properly. A mesh system (UniFi, TP-Link Deco, Eero) with a separate IoT network for devices keeps everything fast and stops a cheap bulb from being a security risk to your laptop and phones.
What to Avoid
- • Cheap own-brand kit that only works in one app and has no Matter/HomeKit support
- • Cloud-only devices for anything safety-critical (locks, alarms, heating)
- • Putting smart bulbs behind smart switches that cut their power
- • Buying a hub for every brand — pick one ecosystem first
- • DIY-ing mains-wired switches without a Part P qualified electrician
A Sensible First Phase
- • Mesh WiFi with a separate IoT SSID
- • Smart lighting in 2–3 main rooms (Hue or equivalent) + wall controllers
- • Smart heating with per-room TRVs (Tado / Hive)
- • Video doorbell (Ring / Nest)
- • One voice assistant tied to the household's phones
